
Very close to our home is Analy High school, we went exploring and took this picture, I have read briefly about Libby on the history of Sebastopol and upon further research find his story to be fascinating, He also discovered that tritium could be used for dating water, and therefore wine.
Willard F. Libby, was the winner of the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1960 for developing Carbon-14 dating,he attended Analy High School in Sebastopol, California, which named its science classroom wing for Libby.
In 1947 Libby developed dating of artifacts based on carbon-14, a radioactive isotope created by sunlight acting on atmospheric nitrogen. The ratio of carbon-14 to stable carbon-12 is nearly constant in air and maintained by living organisms -- plants incorporate carbon during photosynthesis and animals feed on plants or other animals. After death, however, no more atmospheric carbon is consumed, so reduction in carbon-14 (half-life 5730 years) can measure the time since death.
